blue whale
The
blue whale is one of the largest animals on earth. They
were highly prized by whalers a century ago and were nearly
hunted to extinction. Today, blue whale populations are
beginning to grow in size again - at least along the pacific
coasts of the United States and Mexico.
Blue
whale populations exist in at least three areas of the globe.
The largest is in the antarctic region where krill is in
great abundance. Krill is their favorite food.
There
are also populations in the northern hemisphere though their
sightings are rather sporadic. A sub-species, lives in the
tropical waters of the South Pacific ocean.
While
some populations are increasing slowly, these animals were
so hunted that in many areas of the world they may never
recover. So seeing one is a rare treat. Trips from Mexico
are probably your best bet at this time, though there are
some to be found in the northern part of the indian ocean.
If
you would like to see one with your own eyes and experience
